I feel compelled to come on and write about two movies that I just watched. Actually, lets go just a step further back and write about a movie I saw Monday night as well.
Ok, so Monday night we went to QC cinema to see "Clerks 2". I thought it was an amazingly funny movie. And here I thought that Kevin Smith lost his touch. From the liberal swearing, vulgar behavior, and obscene religion / Starwars references grew a truly enjoyable film. I must say I enjoyed it more than all the other Kevin smith Films (except Dogma). There even was a scene where a guy had sex with a donkey. Seriously, this movie had close to everything.
Through net flicks I got a film called "Punch Drunk Love". An artsy Adam Sandler movie. Every time he got the crap kicked out of him, or was running for his life, or opened his big mouth to get in more trouble he reminded me so much of Chuckles. I never really saw the similarities before, but now they are glaring. So, its a film about a lonely, psychotic man who started his own business, fell in love with one of his sisters coworkers (he has 7 pestering sisters .... I wonder why he has so many psychological problems and so much repressed anger) and gave out all of his personal info to a sex phone line (so now they are hounding him day and night for more money). Very interesting film. Don't care for Sandler too much, but liked this film.
Ok, also through net flicks I received Lolita. I heard so much about it, that I though I should rent it and find out. When it arrived, I found out that its 2.5 hours long and was made in 1962. So, with this new information, I was sure when starting the film that I would not get drawn into and and probably set it aside after about an hour. Nothing could be further from the truth. It truly was a rare movie that transcended the changes in society over time, and truly shone through with human nature. The cast included such greats as James Mason, Shelley Winters, and even Peter Sellers. I was particularly impressed with Peter Sellers (though I did feel that none of the acting was in any way shoddy) because he is so well known for his comedic portrayals, while in this film he came across as devious, sly and nearly sinister. Ok, so the film starts out, memento style, at the end of the events. James Mason's (BTW his name is Humbert Humbert.... what a delightfully strange name) character confronts Peter Sellers character about something that he has done, and ends up murdering him. Then the movie skips back four years to James Mason having to find room and board in a town close to a teaching position that he has gotten. An obviously lonely single mother (Shelley Winters) is showing him around the house, and he is clearly having none of the heavy handed forwardness that she is expressing towards him. He is about to leave, when she shows him the garden, and whom is sunning herself but little Miss Nympho her self (wearing a bathing suit that must have gotten some slack for being so risky in a movie during the sixties). He takes the room. Lives with the mother and daughter and becomes like part of the family (Not sleeping with anyone yet). He keeps a journal that he writes in a very cramped hand writing declaring his love for Lolita (mind you, she is not legal and he is James Mason in his prime). There are many scenes where all he is doing is pretending, very poorly, to read a book, when all he is doing is watching Lolita (There is a hilarious one where he is watching her with a hoola hoop). They go to a dance and some neighbors imply that they think he is sleeping with the mother (he is not, despite her best efforts) and then imply something else that to the best of my mind was either that they where interested in a wife swap or a 4 way (Not something I would have expected out of a 60's movie). They go home, the mother tries to put the moves on him, Lolita shows up, the mother gets upset, long story short, Lolita gets sent to camp ('Camp Climax', lol, you crazy 60's. It was a girls camp, and the only boy living there was clearly getting it with both hands) for the rest of the summer (...or at least until after James Mason leaves for his teaching job). So, James Mason's only course of action was to marry the mother in hopes of seeing Lolita again. Starts with him laughing at a love letter she writes him, and ends with her dead under a car. He gets sole guardian ship of Lolita, and I don't know if it would be considered incest because he isn't biologically related to her (again, I love the 60's for never out and out saying that they are sleeping together through the entire movie. Rather, they use very clever wordings of things that imply that he's jumping her bones every off chance he gets). Basically around here, was what I considered the main portion of the movie. I really don't want to ruin too much, but I guess I mostly have. eh. ~I was very very impressed with this movie. It flew by and did not feel like a 2.5 hour movie. I think anyone would like this movie for being very well done acting and filming wise. I also think that there is a small group of people(of which I am more or less constantly surrounded) that would look up to James Mason's character, because of his Pedophile tendencies and also his willingness to lie and ruin lives just so he can get some underage loving(I'm looking at you Dickie). I am going to return the netfliks copy, but this movie was so good that I think I may want to own it.
Ok. its late, and I have work tomorrow. See you all when I do.

::I was not quite prepared for the reality of my dual role. On the one hand, the willing corruptor of an innocent, and on the other, Humbert the happy housewife::
:: ~Humbert: Lo, listen a moment. For all intents and purposes I am your father and I am responsible for your welfare. We are not rich, so when we travel, we shall be - we shall uh... we shall be thrown together a great deal. And two people who enter into a cohabitation inevitably lead into a kind of... ~Lolita: The word is "incest". ::
